Glorious great and splendid corner of my life,
Let me remember these full and hedonistic days,
When drowning sweetly deeply cast was I,
And sinking swift had no desire to swim for safety - yet!

    - Anon.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised 'for the good of its victims' may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us 'for our own good' will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis

If you are referring to my calling him "Pussy", it's part of his user name. I was trying to be polite, honest.

I believe it was Wilkes and the Earl of Sanwich (both British politicians) - Wilkes had enjoyed the favours of a certain lady who then attached herself to Sandwich. Sandwich decided to denounce Wilkes in Parliament saying

"I don't know whether he will die on the gallows or of the pox"

    Wilkes replied:

"That would depend on whether I embrace your morals or your mistress sir"

I remember reading somewhere a while back about a time when Winston Churchill had drank one too many, and his secretary or some such female criticised him for being drunk. His retort was something like,"Yes madam, and in the morning I shall be sober, but you shall still be ugly!"

I am reminded of the professor who, in his declining hours, was asked by his devoted pupils for his final counsel. He replied, "Verify your quotations."

~Winston Churchill, The Second World War, Volume IV : The Hinge of Fate
    (1951)

Bessie Braddock (MP): Winston, you are drunk, and what's more, you are disgustingly drunk.

Churchill: Bessie, my dear, you are ugly, and what's more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly.

This exchange was confirmed to Richard Langworth by Ronald Golding, a bodyguard present on the occasion (as Churchill was leaving the House of Commons in 1946).

Re: Don's Favourite Quotes and words of wisdom!

In the 1950s, when Winston Churchill was Prime Minister, he was told about a scandal about a backbench MP who was caught in St. James' Park having sex with a Guardsman. Churchill asked if it was cold the previous night. The man giving him the news told him it was one of the coldest February nights in 30 years, to which Churchill replied "makes you proud to be British"

Only good sex is degrading, bad is just embarrassing. Mae West.
Sigh no more ladies, sigh no more.
    We men were deceivers ever.
One foot in the sea and one on the shore,
    to one thing constant never.
So sigh not so, but let us go,
    and be blithe and bonny.
Converting all your sighs of woe,
    To hey nonny nonny.

    Sometimes only the numbers change...

"If the present Congress errs in too much talking, how can it be otherwise in a body to which the people send 150 lawyers, whose trade it is to question everything, yield nothing, & talk by the hour? That 150 lawyers should do business together ought not to be expected."
